The Citizen Fire Academy is scheduled to start Wednesday, September 2, 2009.  Applications must be turned in by Friday, August 7, 2009. Please keep in mind that this academy is intended as a way for citizens to experience the important role of firefighting and not for certification. For more information please call 720-5032.

When you see a fire engine rushing through the city streets with lights flashing and sirens wailing you might wonder what it would be like to be one of the brave men or women who fight fires, enact rescues and save lives. Now you can by applying to the Wichita Falls Fire Department's Citizen Fire Academy. This hands-on, fast paced academy will introduce you to the exciting and demanding career of a Professional Fire Fighter.

Instruction by Professional Firefighters
This course is taught by Battalion Chief Roger Ritchie and Captain Carl Chancellor. These firefighters have over 40 years experience in the field and as the instructors for all rookies hoping to become members of the Wichita Falls Fire Department.

The Citizen Fire Academy will introduce you to hands-on field work including:
•Handling Attack Lines
•Apparatus Familiarization
•Search and Rescue
•Facility Tours
•"Bunkering Up" in Regulation Fire Gear
•CPR Certification
•Introduction to EMS
•Extrication Techniques Using Hydraulic Rescue Tools
•Hose Handling and Nozzel Reaction
•Live Fire Demonstrations
•High Angle Rescue Demonstrations

The Citizen Fire Academy
CFA requires only one evening a week for 12 weeks for you to learn and live the life of a professional firefighter. Download an Application or pick one up at the Central Fire Station, 1005 Bluff Street, or the Public Safety Training Center located at 710 Flood Street. CFA is Not a Certification Course
The course is not intended as a way to become a certified firefighter, however, if you are interested in becoming a firefighter contact the City's Human Resources Department at 761-7615.

Minimum Requirements
Participants must be 21 years of age, be able to pass a background check and live or work in the City of Wichita Falls.
